Our Leading Principles

FAITH

Students learn to integrate their Catholic faith into all aspects of life, developing a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and understanding their calling as Catholic disciples in the modern world.

LOVE

We acknowledge that our love of God calls us to love of self, love of neighbor, love of work, love of learning, and love of our schools in the way we take pride in all that we do.

MODESTY & COMPASSION

We seek to live in solidarity with others, letting our presence be a good example to our students and those with whom we work. We also take pride in our appearance, recognizing that external presentation reflects internal values and respect for our Catholic identity.

UNITY

We come together to embrace our faith and share our values with the community. We are a welcoming Foundation which is open to others and embraces diversity within the context of our Catholic identity. Our service to others is an expression of this unity.

DISCIPLINE

We encourage positive behavior and do what is right at the right time in the eyes of God and our community. We discipline with love and logic, following the biblical mandate that "discipline produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it" (Hebrews 12:11).

HISTORY

The St. Dominic High School is a Roman Catholic Secondary School with English as the language of instruction. The school was founded in 1994 to provide continuity in the secondary education of the students at the St. Dominic Primary School. Motives for the foundation of an English Catholic High School were:

(i) To provide quality Catholic education for the children of St. Maarten.
(ii) To provide an environment where the spiritual, physical, social, intellectual and emotional needs
of our children can be met with professional guidance and instruction.
(iii) To prevent the early departure of our children from the island to pursue their high school studies
in another country and early departure of catholic formation (in a school environment). This
early departure will not only cause economic hazards, but also emotional and catholic
foundational/formative strains on the children and the families involved.

In 1994 the school started as an English school with an American Curriculum with 32 students in grade 7. After two years, it was decided to switch to the C.X.C exam system and in 2010 became authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Dominic High School has grown to a student population of over 340 students.

The high school years are a formative time in a young person’s life. The transition is being made from late childhood to early adolescence. This young person is experiencing changes in five major areas of his/her life, i.e. intellectual, social, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Our purpose is to meet all the students’ needs. The school environment is one in which the early adolescent should feel comfortable. We will seek to provide an atmosphere of nurturing and understanding. At the same time, students are encouraged to take more responsibility in the form of self-discipline and planning.

The St. Dominic High School will provide the opportunity for students to achieve academic success and to mature in an atmosphere of Catholic Christian ideals and values.

Who was Saint Dominic

St. Dominic de Guzman (1170-1221) was a Spanish Catholic priest and the founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, commonly known as Dominicans. He was born in Caleruega, Spain, known for his deep piety, intellectual rigor and commitment to preaching the Gospel. He was canonized in 1234 by Pope Gregory IX. The feast day of St. Dominic is celebrated on August 8.

The Dominican Order of Friars have become renowned for their dedication to teaching as well as study of the Holy Scripture and popularizing the rosary. Their motto “To praise, to bless, to preach” sums up the core of Dominican beliefs, originating from their founder. His vision reshaped the Church’s approach to preaching and education.
