The St. Dominic High School is a Roman Catholic Secondary School with English as the language of instruction. The school was founded in 1994 to provide continuity in the secondary education of the students at the St. Dominic Primary School. Motives for the foundation of an English Catholic High School were:
(i) To provide quality Catholic education for the children of St. Maarten.
(ii) To provide an environment where the spiritual, physical, social, intellectual and emotional needs
of our children can be met with professional guidance and instruction.
(iii) To prevent the early departure of our children from the island to pursue their high school studies
in another country and early departure of catholic formation (in a school environment). This
early departure will not only cause economic hazards, but also emotional and catholic
foundational/formative strains on the children and the families involved.
In 1994 the school started as an English school with an American Curriculum with 32 students in grade 7. After two years, it was decided to switch to the C.X.C exam system and in 2010 became authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. Dominic High School has grown to a student population of over 340 students.
The high school years are a formative time in a young person’s life. The transition is being made from late childhood to early adolescence. This young person is experiencing changes in five major areas of his/her life, i.e. intellectual, social, spiritual, emotional, and physical. Our purpose is to meet all the students’ needs. The school environment is one in which the early adolescent should feel comfortable. We will seek to provide an atmosphere of nurturing and understanding. At the same time, students are encouraged to take more responsibility in the form of self-discipline and planning.
The St. Dominic High School will provide the opportunity for students to achieve academic success and to mature in an atmosphere of Catholic Christian ideals and values.
